For Artists by Artist
Art Print Express is founded by artist Michelle Leivan to offer fine art giclée prints to other artists at prices to make them accessible not only for the artists to resell but to also give them an opportunity to also connect with their fans to so they can collect their work with reasonably priced quality fine art prints.
Discovering the Call to Serve
Few printmakers understand what an artist needs when creating an acceptable giclée print and it is a concern to send your work to a stranger across the internet. As working artist herself, Leivan began searching for a way to print her own two-dimensional work for the past 10 years and discovered there were few places in North East Kansas that offered giclée print services.
“The problem I kept running into was getting prints to work to my advantage as an artist,” Leivan explained. “First, you have to get the painting digitized and then printed with accurate color, with archival inks, on good paper or canvas and hope you’ll be able to sell the print at a reasonable price,” she said. “No matter where I went, there seemed to be something wrong in the equation and I would end up losing money.”
The number one concern for artists when creating fine art prints is getting the correct color match with the original artwork. Frustrated with her options, Leivan decided to combine her graphic design background with her years of printing experience and start her own giclée print service company.
“I thought it would be a perfect match for my skills and my passion for art,” Leivan said. “I learned years ago how to color correct by the numbers rather than by what is seen on the screen, this skill has been extremely helpful in getting accurate color. I have my whole system calibrated from digitizing the piece with a high-resolution camera to final print.”
Convenience and Reasonable Pricing
Currently located in Michelle’s large art studio, which allows her to keep overhead down and that makes it possible for Art Print Express to offer competitive pricing.
“In turn this allows Art Print Express clients a quality product at a lower price–and that can help their own sales in the current economy.”

About Giclée
Giclée – pronounced “zhee-clay” is a derivative of the French word “gicler” meaning “to spurt”. It is a coined term for the process of making high quality fine art prints from a digital source using ink-jet printing. Artists generally use giclée inkjet printing to make reproductions of their original two-dimensional artwork, photographs or computer-generated art.
The process to create a “giclée print” represents a relatively new advancement in printmaking technology and produces better color control and accuracy than any other current means of image reproduction. Original artwork is translated digitally with high resolution scans, digital cameras or computerized art programs and printed using professional color ink-jet printers. High quality archival inks are used on a variety of surfaces including canvas, fine art papers and photo papers. The quality of the giclée print rivals traditional silver-halide and gelatin printing processes and is commonly found in museums and galleries.
For artists this process is most helpful because they can reproduce their artwork on-demand with minimal effort and manageable cost. The high cost of mass production for an edition is eliminated and each image can be printed on demand. The digital files are archived until they are needed and will not inherently deteriorate as does the older film process. Also, with the giclée process a print can be made to accommodate a variety sizes and onto a variety of media, which gives the artist another option for customization with each client.
